In 2013, Maestro Mescalero Don Ambrosio Martinez Blas created Mezcal El Samaritano in Santiago Matatlan, Oaxaca. The name was inspired by a festivity known as "La Samaritana," which is celebrated on the fourth Friday of Lent. The celebration has deep roots in Oaxaca and has a significant role in the identity of Mezcal El Samaritano.
Don Ambrosio is a 5th generation Mescalero who has been making mezcal since 1993 using the knowledge that has been passed down from generation to generation. Don Ambrosio set out to create his own brand of mezcal at his palenque in Santiago Matatlan, the "World Capital of Mezcal." His palenque which was handed down to him by his father has been producing mezcal for over 40 years.
