La Venenosa Puntas Maximiliana
La Venenosa Puntas is a prized and rare spirit. The puntas in this case refers the first cut off the still, at the highest ABV. This Raicilla is +60% ABV (120 proof!), but it is elegant, subtle, and incredibly complex. It was formerly produced by Gerardo Pena (the cousin of Don Ruben Pena) with Agave maximiliana in Jacales, Jalisco. It is now produced by Esteban Morales in Mascota, Jalisco.
Common aromas include bright fruit like apple and berries, citrus, acetone, herbs, and occasional vegetal or lactic funk. Palate notes are defined by an explosion of fruit—strawberries, grapes, and citrus—alongside creamy notes, herbs, minerality, and mild cheese funk. Generally, this spirit is praised for its surprising smoothness and balance despite high ABV, offering a complex, intense profile.
